GZA/GENIUS MUJA MESSIAH ST. PAUL SLIM GZA: When it comes to thought provoking, street-bred raw lyricism, the Wu-Tang Clan's fountain of wisdom, GZA takes his job very seriously. The way he crafts his double-edged rhyme flow mirrors the skill and precise technique of one who works with fine ceramics. GZA's metaphoric and multi-layered lyrics are often touted by critics as his rap name implies; genius. MUJA MESSIAH:Thee Adventures Of A B-Boy D-Boy (Black Corners) The differences between mainstream and underground rap have always been a bit tenuous, as mainstream is often more political and message-based than it gets credit for, while underground hip-hop's misogyny and regressive themes tend to get ignored. Muja Messiah shatters the implicit split between the two camps, deftly crafting a hip-hop masterpiece that combines indie's nuance and honesty with mainstream's swagger and charisma. Muja makes sure to differentiate himself from the area's famed emo rap while continuing to rep his city hard (Messiah has the letters MPLS—spelled out in guns, swords, and dollar signs—tattooed on his neck). In lead single "Get Fresh," he takes on those who are "backstabbin' my city / like it's all backpackin' and hippies / like it ain't crackin' in my city." With a winsome flow, Muja covers everything: cocaine deals and money-fetish materialism, progressive politics and introspective thoughts, dark reminiscences, well-spun punchlines. The album is refreshingly multifaceted, exactly the kick in the pants hip-hop needed. - AV Club -The Onion- Best of The Decade $15.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $18.00 AT THE DOOR TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE, TRIPLE ROCK AND 5TH ELEMENT IN UPTOWN |

A STORM OF LIGHT VIA VENGEANCE BATTLEFIELDS FRONTIER **MASS MOVEMENT - review (w/c 19 Oct) " An aural panorama as beautiful and apocalyptic as the artwork which accompanies this second release from A Storm of Light. Crushingly heavy guitars and tortured vocals segue into doleful strings, perfectly evoking this tale of devastation and rebirth. The spoken words of the legendary Lydia Lunch flawlessly capture the tone and intent of the music. Fans of Neurosis, the prophetic warnings of Rachel Carsen’s ‘Silent Spring’ and Genet/Neurot recordings in general will fully appreciate this release. Essential listening." |

LESLIE AND THE LY'S CHRISTOPHER THE CONQUERED ST. PAULI GRLA Leslie Hall initally caught the hearts & eyes of America’s children when she began posting images of her world famous gem sweater collection on the interweb. Word of mouth quickly grew and within a month Leslie recieved over 2 million unique hits to her website, which left her with a $800 bill for exceeding her bandwidth. In order to raise money to pay back her mother, Leslie did what any 200 lb. plus girl from Iowa would do. She became a rapper. Leslie’s star has risen quickly with such viral video music hits as GOLD PANTS, BEATDAZZLER, & ZOMBIE KILLER. Her stage show is like nothing you have seen before. Complete with video projection & 3-6 costume changes (all lovingly hand sewn by her mother), you can expect to be “beat”dazzled. Leslie’s laserbeam dance moves have been known to cause near blindness in the fans who gather at her shows. You can be sure that gay men will squeal with delight when she tumbles and triumphs never before seen dance moves. If you are lucky, it is possible that a bead of perspiration may ripple down her brow and upon your flesh. TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE, THE TRIPLE ROCK AND RED'S SAVOY PIZZA IN UPTOWN |

TOBACCO (OF BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW) HIGH PLACES THE HOOD INTERNET Tobacco sometimes runs with a group called Black Moth Super Rainbow. On Fucked Up Friends, his latest mission, he works alone. Tobacco’s tools are analog synths, tape machines, and deformed incantations from throats unknown. His music is a wash of distortion and melody over jagged beats. It amalgamates hypnotic, cosmopolitan pop, gritty, propulsive hip-hop and a night full of fevered dreams. It buoys the spirit, braces the nerves, and smuggles disoriented paranoia deep into the subconscious. These are anxiously driven, effortlessly smooth and unapologetically badass sounds of inner nature. It's not that Brooklyn's High Places remind me of a lot of things I like already -- minimal, bleary indie pop like Beat Happening or Young Marble Giants; subaqueous psychedelia from Ricardo Villalobos to Martin Denny exotica; girlish nursery-rhyme vocals; New York City; heavy syncopation; pentatonic scales; kissing -- it's that I usually only get to have them all together when I'm dreaming. High Places sing about dreaming. They sing about dreaming and evolution and writing letters -- to Mars, I think! -- and even though they sing about the haze of falling in love on 'Head Spins', the closest they come to sex is watching hermaphroditic banana slugs swap sperm while clouds roll overhead. This all happens in about nine minutes. Sure, they have a handful of other songs that they play live, but High Places are a relatively small, embryonic band, literally and metaphorically. There are only two members, Rob Barber and Mary Pearson. They clink on glasses and hit hand drums and adorn them with spare guitar figures before sending everything through basic effects processors. The Hood Internet is a Chicago-based duo specializing in mashups of hip-hop (from the mainstream to the underground) with indie rock. They also run a blog of the same name through which they release their music, a venture that helped them earn notability as a minor internet phenomenon. The Hood Internet is composed of Aaron Brink (aka ABX) and Steve Reidell (aka STV SLV). BITCH BLACK BLONDIE THE STATE OF Bitch's latest record, Blasted! (release date spring 2010), is an outgrowth of that newfound creative spirit, a real labor of love and her strongest solo album to date. The melodies are catchy and haunting and the lyrics unflinchingly honest. Bitch plays electric violin like a rock guitar, and adds layers of unique instrumentation to create a sonic symphony. Blasted! is fully self-produced and will be released with money raised by Bitch's loyal fan base. With Blasted!, Bitch continues to push the envelope with her wild-spirited avant-garde “theatrical punk” sound and has produced her most listenable and enjoyable album to date. DEER TICK THOSE DARLINS PRARIE SONS Deer Tick began in December of 2004 in the bedroom of Providence native, John McCauley. With a tape recorder and a nylon string guitar, he did what most anybody would do; he made tapes for his friends. When McCauley, then 18 years old, got his hands on Hank Williams Sr.'s "Gold" collection and locked himself in his room listening to it on repeat until he finished his bottle of brandy, it all became fairly obvious to him-- he was on his first tour just a few months later. After years of being on the road, fully developing his distinct howl of a voice, anddo honing his guitar skills, McCauley had earned himself a following of devoted fans and supporters. Throughout all of this touring and selling his songs on CD-R, it became apparent that putting out a real album was the natural next step in McCauley's musical life. McCauley recorded Deer Tick's debut War Elephant at age 19, performing every instrument on the album. War Elephant was originally released in September of 2007 to much critical acclaim from The New York Times, Brooklyn Vegan, Spin, and many others. But McCauley's vision from the start was for Deer Tick to be a real band, and a rotating cast of characters simply wouldn't suffice anymore. In April of 2007, just weeks before a national tour, McCauley turned to Dennis Ryan, a hard-hitting young drummer who had just decided to cut his college career about 3 years short. The two had played together before and their energy while performing was something unmatched for the both of them. It took no convincing Dennis at all that this was a good idea. He said "yes" before McCauley even finished asking him. Dennis Ryan grew up in neighboring Pawtucket, RI. His dream had always been to become a famous, and perhaps more importantly, badass drummer. His epiphany occurred at the curious age of 3, while watching Ronnie Tutt play the drums with Elvis Presley in a rerun of the "Aloha From Hawaii" special. After the national tour it was time for Deer Tick to find a bassist. McCauley had tried to convince Chris Ryan, a bass player in town, to join Deer Tick for quite some time. That August, Chris Ryan returned from a trip driving his VW Van from Providence to Costa Rica and back (though he only made it as far as Guatemala and back). Chris came speeding down Empire Street in downtown Providence, where McCauley was sitting at a table outside enjoying a beer. A swarm of people surrounded the van welcoming Chris and his traveling companions home. Before you knew it McCauley was asking the road weary traveler to join Deer Tick again. The band was completed in August 2008, when Andrew Tobiassen, a funky, young guitarist living in Providence, RI joined up with the band. Born On Flag Day is Deer Tick's highly anticipated second full-length album and follow-up to the band's 2007 internationally acclaimed debut, War Elephant (reissued in 2008 by Partisan Records). This release follows two years of extensive touring in sold out clubs across the country and abroad. Unlike War Elephant, this album features the three new members of Deer Tick that principal songwriter John J. McCauley III recruited to become the band's current incarnation - Andy Tobiassen, Dennis Ryan and Chris Ryan. Born On Flag Dayreflects a natural evolution from a singular vision of one songwriter to something much greater. The album is set for a June 23rd street date on Partisan Records. $10.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $12.00 AT THE DOOR TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE, AT TRIPLE ROCK AND RED'S SAVOY PIZZA IN UPTOWN!!! |

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM GUZZLEMUG The Sleepytime Gorilla Museum opened its doors to the public in 1916, only to show them a well-managed fire. Its doors were closed shortly thereafter and remained so for the rest of the century. Almost. The last year of the 20th century found the improbable trio of words once again adorning a placard posted outside a derelict urban building, with the addendum- "No Humans Allowed." Indeed, the awkward re-inaugural movements were witnessed by a lone banana slug (Ariolimax dolichophallus)-- a suitable beginning for a group that would soon shelter Oakland California's hindmost interpreters of Anti-Humanist literature. Their incessant travels since 2001 have brought new life to the Movement. Like their namesake and its instigators (Futurist Lala Rolo and Black-Mathematician John Kane) the new museum embraces the essential weakness of the Movement. But also like their predecessors they reject the elitism of the avant-garde in favor of a reckless populism: They are entertainers. Though not without humor, their often wide-ranging musical and theatrical choices are rarely ironic. This sincerity extends to a passionate craftsmanship, as evidenced by: 1. The LIVE SHOW, a costumed festival of hyperventilating self-derangement, which has yet to include much of a puppet show, but has included human performers of varying stiffness (see Ink Boat). 2. The ALBUMS- Grand Opening and Closing (2001 Seeland/Chaosophy), a collection of boisterous laments for the failure of the millennial apocalypse; Live (2003 Sickroom), a collage of mishaps and singularities from various stages; and Of Natural History (2004 Mimicry), a setting, in part, of a debate between two contradictory pillars of 20th C. Anti-Humanism: The Futurists versus the Unabomber. 3. The INSTRUMENTS, many of which are homemade creations of bassist/producer/mechanic Dan Rathbun: The Slide-piano Log, the Percussion Guitar, the Electric Pancreas, the Vatican, & the Pedal-action Wiggler; or rare: Autoharp, Glockenspiel, Toy Piano, & Viking Rowboat. 4. The ROAD approached as (A) a place of potential learning: the bloody history of our doomed nation, its warm and varied current inhabitants- our hosts and their regional splendors, and (B) a scar which conducts us in our lumbering Green Bus into the temples of Nature: Forests, swamps, deserts, mountains, and coasts, with national parks and rest stops alike as places of reverence and study, sources of sound and vision, many of which appear on Of Natural History. 5. The FOOD, prepared on the bus kitchen in large pots, in quantities befitting a seven+ person crew, mixing local ingredients with reliable spices, beans, and the "other black meat"- coffee. $12.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $15.00 AT THE DOOR TICKETS AVAILABLE ONLINE AND AT TRIPLE ROCK AND RED'S SAVOY PIZZA IN UPTOWN!!!!!! |

TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET TONY SLY (OF NOUSEFORANAME) RED PHONE DISPATCH Laramie, Wyoming has never exactly been a hotbed for, well, anything. Let alone any kind of punk rock scene. But you'd be surprised, I certainly was when I heard about the pride of the Cowboy State: Teenage Bottlerocket. Turns out there's actually a vibrant underground scene out yonder and Laramie boasts about a dozen bands. I propose this: isolation is their best ally in light of the dismal music trends of today. These guys don't trouble themselves with low-cut jeans or makeup, instead they work hard at perfecting their infectious songs and tightening up their live set. Fashion-core? Never heard of it. Their only gimmick is the kick-ass punk songs they write. $8.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $10.00 AT THE DOOR TICKETS AVAILABLE AT TRIPLE ROCK, RED'S SAVOY PIZZA IN UPTOWN AND ONLINE!!! |

CATTLE DECAPITATION REVOCATION ENFOLD DARKNESS CATTLE DECAPITATION Well over a decade since its inception, has forged its not-so-humble beginnings in veggie gore-grind into one of extreme metal's most relentless forces, encompassing a sound as schizophrenic as their record collections but with a determined lyrical stance resolutely damning the ills of humanity. REVOCATION draws from the best aspects of the metal world on their Relapse debut Existence Is Futile. The trio blends world class musicianship with a pronounced technical flair; songs twist, turn, and stop on dime as dizzying solos dance with thrash metals razor-sharp precision to create an album greater than the sum of its parts. Existence is Futile transcends all of modern metal’s sub-genres and labels and firmly establishes REVOCATION as one of the finest new metal bands of the 21st century. |

MONO THE TWILIGHT SAD TAKEN FROM THEIR WIKIPEDIA ENTRY: Mono are a Japanese instrumental rock band, formed in 1999 in Tokyo, Kantō, Honshū. The band consists of Takaakira Goto (electric guitar), Yoda (electric guitar), Tamaki Kunishi (bass guitar, electric guitar, piano, glockenspiel), and Yasunori Takada (drum kit, glockenspiel, synthesizer). The band's style of instrumental rock music is influenced by the genres of experimental rock and shoegazing, as well as by both the classical and contemporary classical periods of classical music, and also by noise and minimalism. Mono's sound is characterized by the lead and rhythm guitars of Goto and Yoda respectively, both of whom make extensive use of reverb, distortion and delay effects. The band's live performances are noted for their intensity, both in the playing and in the dynamics. On a personal note, MONO are one of the Triple Rock's favorite bands. MONO easily are in the top five truly great experiences that I have personally had here in my 6 years. They deliver not only musically, but personally, A truly great group of people that allow us in to their world through some of the most beautiful and intense music i have ever personally witnessed. Come and enjoy a night of awesomeness. $12.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $15.00 AT THE DOOR |

ANTISEEN JOE BUCK YOURSELF THE HOSTAGES 10W40 ANTISEEN Band members may have come and band members may have gone but Mad Dog Jeff Clayton and Mighty Joe Young have held the Destructo flag high all these long years. They have raged a sonic blitzkrieg all the way from the backwoods juke joints of South Carolina to the legendary German beer halls and left eardrums bleeding on both sides of the ocean. They have recorded with the likes of notorious madman GG Allin and legendary Alice Cooper guitarist Michael Bruce. Their recordings are the heaviest slabs of out of control redneck rockin' you'll ever hope to come across.....their live shows are the stuff of legend... and they just get meaner with age. ANTiSEEN have been waging a war on musical mediocrity for twenty five years now and by god they're winning. JOE BUCK YOURSELF The once anti-Nashville based Joe Buck gained notoriety as the guitarist of Th' Legendary Shack Shakers. As Hank III's villainous sideman onstage, the snarling upright bass player became infamously recognizable. Joe Buck Yourself is now a bona fide evil motherfucking, one man band. This unique blend of hellbilly punk rock ain't your grandma's hillbilly music. Joe Buck yourself, motherfuckers! $10.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $12.00 AT THE DOOR TICKETS AVAILABLE AT TRIPLE ROCK, RED'S SAVOY PIZZA IN UPTOWN AND ONLINE!!! |
