MINNESOTA SUR SEINE PRESENTS...
URSUS MINOR

LA RUMEUR

La Rumeur, one of the leading French underground rap groups, emerged in 1997 from Elancourt, a suburb south of Paris. Before issuing their first full-length debut record, MCs EkouÈ, HamÈ, Mourad, and Philippe (all graduates of French universities) distributed independent solo singles at their shows: "Le Poison d'Avril" (1997), "Le Franc Tireur" (1998), and "Le Bavar" and "Le Paria" (1999). Following these singles, their fan base grew quickly and then came their first group album, "L’ombre sur la mesure" (EMI, 2002). The record was an homage to the immigrant experiences of their parents' generation, focusing on the Paris massacre of Algerians in 1961, and on the high rate of police abuse of immigrants. One group member, HamÈ, was taken to court by the Interior Minister in 2002 for a magazine article accompanying the release of that first album, with its mention of police crimes. The next album, "Regain de Tension," was released in 2004 after the Interior Ministry had failed to silence the group. That brave Interior Minister who took on HamÈ was one Nicolas Sarkozy, now President of France. La Rumeur’s next record, "Du Coeur ‡ l’outrage," was released in 2007 on their own label, La Rumeur records. Despite Sarkozy’s lawsuit, historians and artists have defended La Rumeur (considered by some to be the most controversial rap group in France), describing their lyrics not as "inciting to violence" but as prophetic measures to avoid violence by giving voice to feelings in the tense suburbs. La Rumeur has a strong sense of history; they identify themselves clearly as sons and daughters of an immigrant generation who helped build contemporary France under inhuman conditions. But they have no pretension to be the voice of the people. They say "singing a song for 500 people is writing 500 songs." The name of group (the rumor) speaks for itself.

Inviting hip hop artists is nothing new for Ursus Minor, who invited for their first two concerts and their first record artists such as Dead Prez, Boots Riley, Spike, and D’ de Kabal, and who later performed with Eyedea and Brother Ali. This will be the group’s fourth Minnesota sur Seine performance, and is a warmup for their next French summer tour. With "Zugzwang," their first record, Ursus Minor (Latin name for the star constellation "Little Bear") made their entry into the 21st century with an approach anchored in current world issues, yet boosted by lessons from the past. In 2005/2006, they toured France and recorded "Nucular" with Brother Ali as a guest on two tracks. They also composed and performed the soundtrack of Jean Marboeuf’s film"Coup de Sang."

Guy Darol wrote in "Jazz" magazine in February 2007 that "Jean Marboeuf has chosen Ursus Minor (which gives an idea of his genius) to create the music of a film noir with few colored touches. . . . The sparkling inventiveness of Ursus Minor (that explodes in the bomb album "Nucular") is the precise grammar that should be going with those pictures of an end of the world."

$8.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $10.00 DAY OF SHOW

Modern Radio is celebrating its 9 year anniversary of releasing records,
setting up shows and supporting artists in both the Twin Cities and
elsewhere around the US with a series of shows and gallery showings. It
is a celebration of the talented and creative people in the Twin Cities
and those who have been involved with the label for years.

This show will also be the release of a collection of out of print, hard
to find and unreleased material by Mirah on a CD called Old Days Feeling.
Mirah previously released a 7" that is now out of print on Modern Radio in 2001 and this is the first solo show for Mirah in the Twin Cities in 4 years. Locals Chambermaids and Danforths have also released CDs on Modern Radio in the past two years and are joined by a newcomer to Modern Radio, Jim and the French Vanilla. This is the home recording project of Jim Blaha of the Blind Shake brought to life on stage. Modern Radio just released a small run of CDs by Jim and the French Vanilla called Roll Out The Candy.

MODERN RADIO RECORD LABEL 9 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

YELLOW SWANS

SICBAY
STNNNG
FT (THE SHADOW GOVERNMENT)
CHURCH OF GRAVITRON

$8.00 ADVANCE TICKETS / $10.00 DAY OF SHOW

This show marks the end of one band and the beginning of another. Yellow Swans will be playing the Twin Cities for the last time this night. Gabriel and Pete of the Yellow Swans have toured the world and released a ton of amazing records for over 6 years and will be playing Minnesota as one of their last four shows. The band will leave behind another release on Modern Radio before calling it a day in the form of a CD called Deterioration on Modern Radio. The CD will be available for the first time this night.

While it is sad to see the end of a great band, the show also marks the
return of another fantastic band, Sicbay. Sicbay was invited to play the 9 year anniversary of Modern Radio, and the one off show idea became the impetus for the band to start playing shows again. Had enough yet? I didn't think so. STNNNG and FT(The Shadow Government) are going to be
playing sets and combining efforts as they all perform a few songs they
wrote together. 10 people on the stage at once! 3 drummers! If thats
not enough for you then we have one more offering. The show marks the
return of Omaha's Church of Gravitron. The project by Omaha's Justin
O'Connor was based out of the Twin Cities for a few years and he returns
for a reissue of a cassette only release, the Divorce Tape, on Modern
Radio.

THREADBARE (REUNION!!!)
STORY OF THE SEA

Threadbare will be reuniting for one show at the Triple Rock Social Club on Friday July 18, 2008. Threadbare was one of the most influential bands to come out of the Minnesota hardcore scene in the mid 90's with an emotional, metallic sound that proved to be years ahead of it's time. They released a 7" on Watermark Records in 1994 and followed that up with "Feeling Older Faster" and "Escapist", both on Doghouse Records. Threadbare also appeared on compilations such as Twin Cities Hardcore "No Slow, All Go", Ebullition Records "XXX", and the classic Anti-Matter comp. Members of Threadbare have gone on to perform and record with Snapcase, 108, The Blinding Light, The Judas Factor, and Seconds Before, among others. This will be their first show together since 1996 and will be a benefit to raise money for a memorial scholarship in honor of Stephanie Perry (sister of bassist Dustin Perry), who lost her brave fight with cancer in 2006. Story Of The Sea are opening.
